Samaín in Galicia: traditions, legends and adventures to live Halloween on the sea with Pirates of Nabia

Samaín in Galicia is much more than a simple costume party. It is an ancestral celebration that has its roots in Celtic culture and marks the end of summer and the beginning of winter, when the border between the world of the living and the world of the spirits becomes thinner.
In the old days, Galician families would light bonfires and place carved pumpkins with candles inside to scare away evil spirits, while the little ones would go around the villages asking for sweets and telling scary stories.
Today, Samaín is still very present in Galician life, adapted to the new times, but without losing its magic, its legends and its connection with nature.
And if there is a place to live a different Halloween in Galicia, it is undoubtedly in the sea.
This year, Piratas de Nabia proposes two unique experiences that combine mystery, fun and Galician tradition in incomparable natural settings: the Vigo estuary and the island of Ons.
PLAN FROM VIGO to Samaín by the Sea: legends, scares and party under the Rande Bridge
On October 30 and 31, the sea is tinged with mystery with the Samaín at Sea, a night crossing of the Vigo estuary where nothing is what it seems.
Aboard the Pirates of Nabia themed ship, passengers will enter a unique experience amidst dim lights, pumpkins, creatures from beyond the grave and a spooky atmosphere that will thrill all the senses.
During the crossing haunted punch and Halloween candy will be served, while the crew shares stories of Galician terror and provides more than one unexpected scare.
All this accompanied by music, animation and a costume contest that will test the creativity of each participant.
It is essential to come in costume, since during the trip there will be a contest for the best costume, with a prize for the winner.
So, the more original and terrifying your outfit is… the more chances you have to win the reward!
The highlight of the experience comes under the lights of the Rande Bridge, when the night is transformed into a real party on the high seas.
For an hour and a half, attendees will experience a perfect blend of terror, fun and seafaring tradition, in one of the most original and exclusive Halloween experiences in Galicia.
PLAN FROM BUEU to Rastrexo on Ons Island: adventure, enigmas and queimada under the stars
For the more adventurous, on Saturday, November 1, comes the Rastrexo on the Island of Ons, a different experience that combines sea, mystery and nature in one of the most magical nights of the year.
The adventure begins with a boat trip from Bueu, where passengers are already immersed in a spooky atmosphere thanks to the themed decorations and sounds of Halloween. During the crossing the first clues will be revealed that will mark the beginning of the great challenge: the night crawl on the island.
Once in Ons, participants will be organized in teams of 2 to 8 people (you can come alone and form a group there). With a map in hand, they will have to follow a nocturnal route full of enigmas, tests and surprise appearances among the paths, forests and beaches of the National Park.
The game has a total duration of 4 hours and a half, and ends with a Galician queimada with traditional conxuro at Casa Acuña, where fire, magic words and the Atlantic breeze create a unique atmosphere that can only be experienced in Galicia.
- One clue leads to the next, and only the fastest and cleverest will manage to complete the course.
- All teams start at the same time, but the activity is against the clock: every minute counts!
- The winner is the team that completes all the tests correctly and arrives first at the end point, where they will be met.
- The prize for the winning team will be awarded on board the return ship, while music and a festive atmosphere bring the adventure to an end.
Important for participants: Bring a flashlight or headlamp, wear comfortable and resistant footwear, bring warm clothes.
