The first of the forts was Romanized around the first century, although hardly any traces of the period have been found (the lack of archaeological surveys makes it impossible to have a record). The Romans baptized the island of Ons as insula Aunios, as quoted by Pliny ‘the Elder’ in his description of the Iberian Peninsula.

Ons Islands
in the Middle Ages

But it was not until the Middle Ages that the Ons archipelago was mentioned more frequently. In the year 899 it appears written in the donation of the island made by King Alfonso III to the bishop of Compostela, and whose Cabildo came to have possession until the s. XVI. The existence of an anthropomorphic tomb (
Laxe dos Cregos
) in the Area dos Cans leads us to believe that there was a convent, or a hermit; according to tradition, this tomb -visible at low tide- is that of a monk who inhabited this island.

In the s. XVI the archipelago of Ons passed into the hands of a noble family, the Montenegro. At the end of this century began the siege of English corsairs and pirates, with Francis Drake at the head, which ended with the islanders fleeing to the coast. During the War of Independence two batteries were built, the Castelo das Rodas (to the north) and the Pereiró fortress (to the south), but little remains of them, as the stone was used for the construction of new houses. The creation of the salting factory of Valladares (known as O Almacén) definitely attracted people from Bueu and Cangas to the island of Ons, who would make fishing their main economic activity.

In the 1920s the islands were repopulated with pine trees to exploit the wood for shipbuilding. In 1929 Manuel Riobó bought the archipelago of Ons, and occupied the salting factory to build a conger eel and octopus dryer and market it. The heir committed suicide because of his republican ideas at the beginning of the Civil War and left the island of Ons without direct management. Franco’s government – for the sake of national defense – expropriated the islands in 1940 with the intention of installing a submarine base, which was never built. The war was followed by famine, accentuated by the geographical and socioeconomic situation of the island; however, the population did not stop growing (in 1955 Ons had a census of 530 inhabitants). During this period the island was endowed with schools and a church.

But the harsh living conditions (lack of infrastructure or lack of a port) led to depopulation in just 20 years, at the same time that an incipient tourist activity began to develop. Many islanders will only maintain a temporary residence. At present, the island of Ons is the only one of the Atlantic Islands with a stable population.

Throughout these centuries, the settlers of the island of Ons paid rents to the Archbishop, first, and to the families of Montenegro and Valladares, later. Still in the first half of the s. XX the islanders paid rent for their homes to the Riobó family, and were also obliged to sell them all the octopus they caught. And although currently no rents are paid, the islanders still consider themselves settlers because the houses where they live and the land are not theirs.

In the last decades of the s. XX the archipelago of Ons passed through the hands of various state agencies (IRYDA or ICONA), until in 1982 it was transferred to the Xunta de Galicia, and on July 1, 2002 it was integrated into the Maritime-Terrestrial National Park of the Atlantic Islands of Galicia. To avoid environmental aggressions, several protection measures have been adopted in addition to the Park: in 2001, Ons Island was demarcated as a SPA [Special Protection Area for Birds]; in 2004, the Ons-O Grove Intertidal Complex was declared a Site of Community Importance; also in 2004, a Special Protection Area for Natural Values; and an OSPAR Zone (in 2008).

The population centers
of the Island of Ons

The population of the island of Ons was quite dense in the past, and the buildings are distributed along the eastern part -more secluded- from the moors to the coast. There are 9 villages that are statistically grouped in a single nucleus, Ons:

O Curro: it is the most populated village (it can be considered the capital of the island), it is urbanized and it concentrates the port, restaurants and bars, the store and the church.

O Caño: it is the continuation of O Curro, along the track that goes up to the lighthouse.

O Cucorno: it is the largest and highest village on the island, occupying the slope of the mountain where the lighthouse is located.

O Laverco: another high village, located next to O Cucorno.

O Centolo (or Sentulo): the most northerly of all, with five houses located in a fairly high area.

Melide: three houses on the way to the lighthouse, very close to O Centolo.

A Chan da Pólvora: half a dozen houses somewhat diverted from the track that goes up to the lighthouse. This is where the island’s campground is located.

Canexol: located on the seashore, towards the south of the island, where the cemetery is located.

Pereiró: it is the southernmost of the island, also one of the largest, located in one of the most fertile of the island.

The island of Ons has a seasonal population, and the number of islanders who stay there all year round is very low. As early as spring, the neighbors who emigrated to the continent return to spend the summer season in their homes. This, together with the hundreds of visitors and campers who come to the archipelago, confirms that the population exceeds half a thousand inhabitants.

Life on Ons Island

Fishing has always been the main economic activity of the islanders and was carried out in traditional boats, some of which still remain. The dorn is small, made of wood with a high and curved bow, deep keel and is moved by rowing, although it can also carry a sail. The gamela is flatter, with a straight stern and bottom, which makes it more maneuverable in the interior of the Pontevedra estuary. The fishing gear used on these vessels to catch octopus, crab and other seafood has been the longline (a line that extends into the sea and has several hooks) and the pots (cages where bait is placed and the prey enters without being able to leave).

And while fishing provided profits (it was sold in the fish markets of Bueu and Cangas), agriculture and cattle raising completed the family’s food and income. On the island of Ons there were crops of rye, beans, corn, potatoes and wheat, which were worked after coming from fishing.

Legends and superstitions
on Ons Island

On the island of Ons there are many legends that are intermingled with the popular beliefs and traditions of Galicia. Isolation and lack of services have generated a unique popular culture, where the knowledge about medicinal plants stands out, but also the belief in myths and superstitions. The Santa Compaña (procession of souls in sorrow announcing death) is a good example of how deeply rooted some superstitions are. It is said that it enters Ons through Centolo point – coming from Noalla – and that after leaving notice it disappears through the cemetery.

Another of the most common is the evil eye. In Ons it is said that to cast an evil eye on someone you have to go to Beluso, bring a toad, put a piece of that person’s clothes in his mouth and conjure it. For this you have to go to the beach, make 18 seaweed balls, put half on the right and the other half on the left, throw the nine on the right into the sea reciting “Ondas do mar sagrado / Tirame o aire de morto / de vivo ou escomulgado“, and then let the other nine dry in the lareira at home, to finish throwing them into the sea.

It is also said that in the Buraco do Inferno (a chasm of 5 meters in diameter and 40 meters deep located in the south) you can hear the wailing of souls suffering torment for their sins when there is a gale. This sound originates when the sea hits the rock. In addition, the legend of the bull says that a bull with golden horns protects us from the “world of the dead”.

Built heritage in Ons Island

There are several heritage elements that we can visit in Ons. The most important is the lighthouse of Ons, one of the largest and most far-reaching in Spain. It is located in O Cucorro, in the highest part of the island, and is the work of the architect Rafael de la Cerda, who built another identical one in the village of A Rúa. It was lit for the first time in 1865, was tiled in 1932, and was one of the last pressurized oil lighthouses – with those of Sálvora and As Sisargas – to exist, since it was powered by photovoltaic energy from 1990 onwards.

Other points of interest from the patrimonial point of view are the ruined batteries (As Rodas to the north of the pier and do Castelo to the south), the Canexol and A Cova forts, the old cemetery of Canexol (more than 200 years old) and the modern church of San Joaquín, probably built on top of an older one.

Ons Island

<!--
