The maximum altitude is the
Alto do Cucorno
(128 masl), next to the lighthouse, and is 4 km from land. The eastern coast (the one facing the estuary) contrasts with the western one, open to the Atlantic Ocean: the former is quite straight and low, and was where the beaches were formed and the population settled; on the other hand, the western coast is very steep, entirely cliffed, and where the action of the sea formed caves known as furnas. Two large inlets(Bastián de Val, to the north, and Canibeliñas, to the south) separate the two slopes.

Onza Island -Illade Onesa or Illa de Onceta-is located 600 m south of Ons Island. It has a rectangular shape, a relatively high profile (its summit reaches 68 meters high) and a surface area of 32 ha. Its coasts are steep and it has two small beaches -Onza north and Onza south- almost inaccessible, as it is under cliffs and surrounded by reef. The vegetation is shrubby (no trees) and its western part, mainly, is a nesting place for seabirds.

Although the dominant climate in the Rías Baixas is humid oceanic, the archipelagos of the Atlantic Islands National Park have a sub-humid Mediterranean climate with an Atlantic tendency. Less rainfall is collected, temperatures are milder than in coastal areas and it is windier. On the island of Ons the average annual rainfall is between 800-900 mm and temperatures are around 14.5ºC.

The maritime-terrestrial ecosystem of the Ons archipelago is protected under the figure of the Park and is home to an important colony of seabirds and seabed with high biodiversity. The arrival of cold currents to the Rías Baixas cause waters very rich in nutrients and oxygen, and promote an abundant biological richness.

The flora of the island of Ons is mainly scrubland: heather, blackthorns, ferns, hiniestas, broom(Cytisus insularis) and gorse. The arboreal vegetation is reduced to willows and alders in the small watercourses, and to a lesser extent, eucalyptus, pine and oak trees. Ons is currently deforested, but in the past it was covered with native species, such as thePyrenean oak (Quercus pyrenaica), the cork oak or the cork oak(Corema album) in the sandy areas.

As for the fauna on the island of Ons, the numerous colonies of birds that inhabit the archipelago stand out above all. There are abundant yellow-legged gulls(Larus cachinnans), whose most important worldwide colony is in the Cíes Islands, and shaggy cormorants(Phalacrocorax aristotelis), which nest on the cliffs. Other birds such as the Red-billed Chough and the Alpine Swift are also important; on the other hand, the Common Guillemot(Uria aalge) and the Lesser Black-backed Gull(Larus fuscus) are becoming less frequent.

Terrestrial mammals are rare. Common shrews(Crocidura russula) and otters(Lutra lutra) stand out, but other invasive mammals became a plague, as Ons did not have predators such as foxes, mustelids or birds of prey. As for marine mammals, the most frequent are the common dolphin(Delphinus delphis), arroaces (Tursiops truncatus) and sperm whales(Physeter macrocephalus); but there are also sightings of the fin whale (Balaenoptera physalus) and other cetaceans, and to a lesser extent loggerhead turtles(Caretta caretta) and leatherback turtles(Dermochelys coriacea).

The habitats of Ons Island

The marine environment represents approximately 85% of the
Maritime-Terrestrial National Park of the Atlantic Islands of Galicia.
. The warm surface waters carried by the Gulf Stream, the amplitude of the tides and local upwelling (a phenomenon that brings nutrient-rich water to the surface during the summer), favor the development of numerous habitats. Many organisms are adapted to extreme changes and live in the rocky communities of the intertidal: mussels (they occupy a large surface area), barnacles (very exposed to sea shocks) and limpets (they adhere to the rocks so as not to dry out). In the subtidal, the brown algae forests stand out, with species that exceed two meters in height. All of them form an ecosystem that provides food and shelter to other marine species: spider crabs, conger eels, damselfish, crabs, octopuses, etc.

In the sea, the main mobile bottoms of the National Park are sand, gravel and maërl. The sandy bottoms abound with bivalves (scallops and volandeira, but also clams, cockles and razor clams), flat fish that mimic the bottom (plaice, ray, cuttlefish and turbot) and a rich interstitial fauna that lives between the grains of sand. The gravel bottoms, in turn, are formed by the remains of shells and mollusks, and are inhabited by microalgae and species such as scallops, scallops and razor clams. Finally, the maërl bottoms are made up of calcareous algae that accumulate, although only those in the upper zone are alive, and species such as the blonde clam, clock, sandeel or juvenile stages of many others.

Among the terrestrial ecosystems are the steep coastal cliffs, subject to the action of the sea and the wind. Ons Island is the perfect nesting place for seabirds, but they are also an extremely harsh habitat. The living conditions in the dunes and on the beaches (the action of the wind, strong sunstroke and high salinity) mean that native forests are scarce and most of the island is covered by scrubland.

Flora in Ons Island

On the cliffs there is only space for vegetation adapted to hostile environments, under the influence of the wind, the salinity of the sea and the colonies of birds that nest on their shelves. As for invertebrates, there are endemisms in the groups of blatoptera (cockroaches), coleoptera (beetles), dermatoptera (earwigs), lepidoptera (harlequin butterfly and macaon butterfly) and orthoptera (grasshoppers and crickets).

The low soil humidity and the absence of permanent watercourses cause the scarcity of amphibians (common salamander, Iberian horned toad and Iberian newt). On the other hand, we can find reptiles such as the Iberian lizard -colonizing- and the ocellated lizard (the largest in Europe with about 18 cm without counting the tail); and snakes: ladder snake, southern smooth snake and viperine snake.

Most of the mammals in the park are not native to the islands. They were introduced by man and represent a real threat (the wild cat or the American mink) to some native species. Small rodents (house mouse, field mouse, gray rat and black rat), bats (common bat, horned bat and big horseshoe bat) and others such as the rabbit, European hedgehog, gray shrew and mole are also frequent.

But without a doubt, the birds are the great dominators of the Atlantic Islands National Park. The abundance of resources, the scarce human presence and the availability of breeding sites are factors that favor their settlement, and the fact that it is an ideal home and stopover point for many species encourages ornithological tourism.
ornithological tourism
. As for seabirds, here we find the world’s largest concentration of yellow-legged gulls (about 20,000 breeding pairs) and shag (about 1,000), the latter “endangered” according to the Red Book of Birds of Spain, which classifies the European storm petrel as “vulnerable”.

More specifically, the island of Ons is home to one of the most important breeding nuclei of black-headed gulls in Spain, with one hundred breeding pairs. Hundreds of great cormorants use the archipelago as roosting grounds in winter, when the European gannet is frequently present, while in summer the black-footed tern and the Balearic shearwater can be seen. Sandpipers, herons, egrets, egrets, stonechats and curlews are also common on the beaches and cliffs, as well as other waders. Also important are the colonies of birds of prey (goshawk, buzzard, kestrel, nightjar, peregrine falcon and swift) and small birds (chickadees, warblers, blackbirds, blackbirds, wood pigeons, finches, turtle doves and greenfinches) that nest among the trees.

<img decoding="async" src="/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/Phalacrocorax_aristotelis_Cormoran-Monudo-scaled-1.jpg"
