Holidays in the Cíes Islands

The Cíes Islands are a slice of paradise hidden in the Ría de Vigo, which is why the Romans dubbed it “the island of the gods”. These islands—without as much publicity as the Caribbean islands and with much colder waters—also have crystal-clear waters, fine white sand and lets you get in touch with nature at its purest. Perhaps it’s not always sunny, but any time is a good time to enjoy this natural reserve to the fullest.

Holidays in the Cíes Islands is a great way to get in touch with nature, to learn to appreciate it and to show respect for its balance at all time. Hiking is the best way to enjoy the islands. These routes lead from the jetty to quiet, hidden and nearly unspoilt beaches and end in the highest areas, giving you spectacular views of the estuary and the cliffs.

A stay at the islands is perfect to observe the behaviour of the many birds who call them their home. In fact, the Cíes Islands are a Special Protection Area for Birds. From the bird observatory, you can see the Caspian gull—whose colony in the islands is equivalent to 10% of its total population worldwide—, the common shag, the peregrine falcon, the common raven, the European robin or the Sardinian warbler.

To enjoy a peaceful day in the Cíes Islands, you can go on a day trip, arriving aboard one of the ferries that Piratas de Nabia runs between Vigo and the islands. If you prefer to spend a longer holiday, you can stay at the campsite—your only option for accommodation in the nature reserve. Spending the night at this campsite near Rodas Beach—declared one of the most beautiful in the world—in a forested area amidst nature will definitely be an unforgettable experience for you if ever you decide to go for it, giving you the chance to discover the island’s secrets at night.

Going scuba diving would be a magnificent climax to your holidays in the Cíes Islands. Swim with octopuses, lobsters, soles and spider crabs while you observe how the mussels and goose barnacles grow amidst the rocks. The veritable treasure trove of marine life and the clear waters will definitely let you enjoy the experience to the fullest!
