Explore Ons Island through its trails

Hiking Trails on Ons Island

Southern Trail, Lighthouse Trail, Northern Trail and Castelo Trail

The four hiking trails described below can only be done on Ons Island as the entire island of Onza—except its beaches—is classified as a nature reserve. All trails set out from the information booth in As Dornas—beside the pier—, from where you can get information on the routes and other interesting aspects.

The existing paths have made the circular format of all the trails possible and they’re a great way for visitors to get a better appreciation of the natural and cultural values of the island. It is important to heed the signs and all instructions given by the Park’s staff.

The Southern Trail: a walk into “hell”. A fascinating route

The Southern Trail covers a large part of the island, going through the entire southern half of Ons Island. It sets out from the information booth in As Rodas, climbs the street in O Curro and—upon reaching the crossroads—descends along the track that leads to Area dos Cans, the most popular beach on the island....

The Lighthouse Trail is a hike with great views

The Lighthouse Trail starts with a climb up the main street of O Curro. Upon reaching the crossroads, turn right and continue along the paved track that winds its way among fishermen’s houses and hórreos and climbs towards the village of O Cucorno. From there, you can see the Ons Lighthouse, which was built in...

The Northern Trail: a trek through the north

The Northern Trail (or the “Naturist Trail”) is the most popular trail on Ons Island, as it’s the one used to get to the nudist beach of Melide. It sets out from the information booth of the Atlantic Islands of Galicia Natural Park and covers the entire northern part of the island. It crosses the...

The Castelo Trail, which overlooks the estuaries

The Castelo Trail is the shortest route on the island and the busiest. It’s an easy hike that begins in the rest area near As Dornas Beach, which gets its name from the traditional fishing boats used by the islanders. Going north, there’s a path that borders the eastern coast and enters a small willow...
